Prof. Bootsy gives us an idea how he layers sound with his bass. He has the option of adding effects to the whole bass, or perhaps just one string is he hears that. He could conceivably pan the outputs of all the strings so that as he goes from low to high, the sound pans from left to right, although you must remember, in that case, an octave E (12th fret on the low string) would come out of a different speaker placement than that same pitch on the D string, second fret. That's due to which string the tone is played on.
